He served as Chairman of Social Science Research Council from 1969-1974, Vice Chancellor of Osmania University from 1977-1982, Vice Chancellor of Andhra Pradesh Open University from 1982-1985, Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Open University from 1985-1990 and Chairman of University Grants Commission from 1990-1995. He was instrumental in establishment of Open University system in India with establishment of Andhra Pradesh Open University and Indira Gandhi National Open University of which he was the founder Vice Chancellor.

(b. 15May, 1929) obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Economics degrees from Osmania University. He served as Chairman of Centre for Economics and Social Studies. Recipient of the Padma Bhushan Award in 2004. He was also a member of Seventh and Eight Planning Commission and Finance Commission of India.

He is currently the Director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad. A renowned Chemist known being instrumental in synthesis of more than 500 new chemical entities with potential biological activities such as anticancer, anti-arthritic, antifungal and antidepressants. He has received several awards in recognition of his scientific contributions, and some notable are CSIR Technology Award, CSIR Young Scientist, CNR Rao National Prize for Chemical Research and FAPCCI award.
